In February of 2024, Dave was doing his normal dad routine, but while preparing for his shower, he felt a horrible shooting pain across his head and passed out. Xristo, his 9 year old son immediately knew something was wrong and ran to the bathroom to find his father on the floor, bleeding and unresponsive. Xristo kept his cool and with a little guidance from his yiayia, he called 911 and help was quickly on the way.

Little did Dave know, after being stabilized at the hospital and multiple tests, that a deformed cluster of blood vessels in his head had ruptured causing bleeding on his brain. After a week in the hospital and more tests, it was determined the cluster should be removed a few weeks later. While the 16 hour surgery was successful Dave remained in the hospital another few weeks before moving to inpatient therapy at Kessler Institute and then finally returning home about a month and a half after that.

Although the chances of a rupture occurring again is minimal, Dave now spends all his energy trying to recover. The family faces mounting hospital bills and hardship from his inability to work. Recovery from an AVM rupture can take anywhere from 2-12 months. Sometimes there is no safety net in place when life deals you a tough blow. This can happen to anyone. Luckily Dave prepared his son to know what to do in case of an emergency, it likely saved his life. Now he teaches his next biggest life lesson; how to get through the hardest physical challenges and get back to life after almost losing his.

*Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) happen when a group of blood vessels in your body forms incorrectly. In these malformations, arteries and veins are unusually tangled and form direct connections, bypassing normal tissues. This usually happens during development before birth or shortly after. If an AVM in the brain ruptures, it can cause bleeding in the brain, stroke or brain damage.

We are fundraising to help the Grimes Family cover unforeseen medical costs.  This is why the SCF Foundation was created, to step up in times of need
